FAQs About Areola Restoration / 3D Nipple Tattoos
What is areola and nipple reconstruction or restoration?
Areola and nipple reconstruction or restoration is the recreation of a nipple and/or areola on the breast mound following breast reconstruction. This can be achieved through surgery or created non-surgically through cosmetic tattooing, depending on the desired outcome.
Why choose cosmetic tattooing for areola and nipple restoration?
For many women, it’s a matter of looking and feeling more comfortable with themselves after mastectomy or other breast surgery. 3D nipple or areola tattoos give the appearance of the areola complex including the nipple, but without the “bump” or projection created by surgical nipple reconstruction. This is the best of both worlds for some patients, especially those who prefer not to wear a bra and do not want the projection created by a surgically reconstructed nipple to be visible through their shirts.
What is involved in areola and nipple tattooing?
We use digital micropigmentation technology to deposit color into the dermal layer of the skin. We can do this over a surgically reconstructed nipple to add color to the existing nipple and create a surrounding areola. We also can create a three dimensional looking nipple and areola on a breast mound without a surgically reconstructed nipple. In addition, we can add color and highlights to a previous cosmetic nipple-areola tattoo for an improved look.
Why do you use the term “3D” for areola and nipple tattoos?
The term comes from the highly realistic, natural looking nipple and areola that can be achieved when advanced technology is used by experienced specialists. The results appear three-dimensional without the “bump” or projection created by surgical nipple reconstruction.
Are areola restorations (3D nipple tattoos) covered by insurance?
Yes, both surgical reconstruction and non-surgical restoration of the nipple-areola complex are procedures covered by most insurance companies.

FAQs About Scar Camouflage with Tattooing
Why consider scar camouflage?
Scars are visible signs left on the skin after a wound has healed. They may result from accidental injuries or surgical procedures. In certain instances, they can have a very negative impact on a person’s confidence, self-image, and psychological and emotional wellbeing.
What are the options for scar camouflage?
A variety of options are available for removing scars, from simple topical treatments to surgical revision with advanced techniques in wound closure. The recommended approach varies based on the type and degree of scarring.
The goal of these different treatments is much the same: to “camouflage” the scar so that it is more consistent with the surrounding skin tone and texture. Cosmetic tattooing offers another option that has proven effective, and for some patients may be the most attractive. Scar camouflage with tattooing isn’t new, but it has dramatically improved with the development of new techniques and pigments that can make scars practically invisible.
How are scar camouflage tattoo procedures performed?
Scar camouflage with tattooing is a sterile, office-based procedure that utilizes techniques of medical tattooing to blend the color of the surrounding skin into an existing scar to minimize its appearance. We use advanced digital micropigmentation technology with various shaped needles and a customized color to impregnate the skin with ink.
Is there downtime?
Most people can go back to work immediately. A dressing may be advised for seven days along with topical lotions. We recommend no swimming or excessive sweating for approximately two weeks. Please note that aftercare is individual since everyone heals differently.
Who can benefit from scar camouflage with tattooing?
Patients with scars that are lighter than the surrounding skin are called hypopigmented scars. These scars can be from surgery, traumas or burns or from various procedures like cleft palate, breast, abdominal and facial surgeries, as well as surgeries on the legs and arms. We recommend that scars be at least 12 months old and are not changing color anymore. We call this a stable scar.
Are scar camouflage tattoos permanent?
Everyone reacts differently to the tattoo procedure and has an individualized result. We explain that the tattoo may fade over time, which would necessitate a touch-up procedure.
How long do the procedures take?
The procedures on average take about 30 to 60 minutes.
Are scar camouflage tattoo procedures painful?
Scar camouflage with tattooing can be uncomfortable but is usually well tolerated. Topical anesthetic creams are unable to be utilized since they tend to interfere with the color of the skin and the procedure.
How do you ensure good results?
During the initial consultation, we can discuss the specifics of your scar, skin tone and goals, and develop a treatment plan accordingly. Generally speaking, because it is very difficult to lighten a tattoo once complete, the best approach in many cases is to seek a lighter result from the first session, and if necessary, add color in a second session.
Are there any potential problems that can occur during or after the procedure?
The problem most seen in camouflage tattooing is color fading or poor color uptake. This occurs when scars have poor blood supply, resulting in poor or short-lasting color uptake. There also is a risk of infection or allergic reactions to ink or materials used for the procedure. We seek to minimize the risk of problems or a poor outcome by taking a careful history and requiring clearance from a medical provider before the procedures.
What’s a touch-up and when is it needed?
A touch-up is a term we use for a follow-up session to add more color or adjust the tattoo. We usually proceed with a touch-up six weeks after the initial tattoo. It takes about the same time as the initial session with the same post-procedure care and instructions.
How much do scar camouflage tattoo procedures cost?
The cost is determined by the area and size.
Does insurance cover scar camouflage tattoo procedures?
Insurance generally does not cover scar camouflage tattooing.
